Mutugi Mutegi

Mutugi Mutegi is a Senior Associate at Bowmans in Nairobi, specialising in competition law, financial services regulatory, and capital markets. He advises clients on regulatory compliance across various financial sectors in Kenya, including capital markets and securities law, insurance regulatory law, mergers and acquisitions, and competition compliance.

Mutugi has advised British International Investment on its KES 8 billion sale of its shareholding in I&M Group Plc, being only the second transaction executed on the new block trade board on the Nairobi Securities Exchange; various Tier 1 and Tier 2 Kenyan banks on the implementation of the DhowCSD platform by the Central Bank of Kenya; Allianz S.E. on its proposed joint venture with Sanlam to create Africa's largest insurance conglomerate; CVC Global Partners on the acquisition of Unilever's Kenyan tea assets; and Allianz Insurance Company of Kenya on its transfer and amalgamation of business with Jubilee Health Insurance. He has also defended steel manufacturers in cartel investigations by the Competition Authority of Kenya, represented a leading transportation solutions platform in the Online Food and Groceries Delivery Platform Market Inquiry, and advised on the first-ever proposed airport concession in Kenya. He has experience advising on asset-backed securities worth over USD 600 million, drafting the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood) Bill for consideration before the Kenyan Senate, and advising on regulatory investigations across multiple sectors.

Mutugi holds an LL.M in Mercantile Law (with Distinction) from the University of Pretoria, an LL.B (Second Upper Division) from Kenyatta University, and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a registered Company Secretary with the Institute of Certified Secretaries.

He has been shortlisted for Young Lawyer of the Year at the Nairobi Legal Awards (2022), was a Finalist in the Private Practice Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Africa Legal Awards (2020), and was a Finalist in the Lawyer of the Year Award at the Nairobi Legal Awards (2020).
