Edwin Baru

Edwin Baru is a Partner in the Projects, Energy & Infrastructure Department at Bowmans in Nairobi, specialising in energy law, infrastructure projects, project finance, and mergers and acquisitions. He has vast experience in energy, natural resources, infrastructure transactions, and M&A in Kenya and the wider East Africa region.

Edwin has advised Fortescue Future Industries on the development of green hydrogen production facilities in Kenya; Eni Energy on its bio-fuel project in Kenya; Actis Energy, sponsors of the 100 MW Kipeto wind project (the second largest wind project in Kenya); Empower New Energy on renewable power projects in East Africa under a USD 760,000 SEFA grant from the African Development Bank; Frontier Energy on the development and financing of captive solar systems for Bamburi Cement; and Windlab Kenya on the development of an 80 MW wind‑solar‑storage project in Meru County. He has also advised on M&A transactions including Proto Energy's acquisition of Sea Gas and Solutions East Africa, and Globeleq's proposed acquisition of the Menengai geothermal project. In the infrastructure and PPP space, he has advised Africa50 and Power Grid Corporation on the first transmission PPP project in Kenya, and a consortium on an affordable social housing project comprising 4,054 units in Kibera, the largest informal settlement in Africa.

Edwin holds an LL.B from the University of Nairobi, a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, and is a Certified Public Secretary. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a practicing Company Secretary.

He has been ranked as Up and Coming for Projects & Energy by Chambers Global (2026), as a Next Generation Partner for Privatisation and Projects by The Legal 500 (2025–2026), and as a Rising Star Partner for Project Development by IFLR1000 (2022–2025).
