Alex Mathini

Alex Mathini is a Partner in the Corporate Department and Head of the Nairobi Tax Practice at Bowmans, specialising in tax law, mergers and acquisitions, corporate and commercial law, and private equity. He advises clients on corporate transactions, tax planning, and tax dispute resolution, with a focus on delivering commercially pragmatic solutions across a wide range of sectors.

Alex has advised AfricInvest Fund III on its investment in Silafrica Plastics and Packaging; Kenya Airways on its turnaround strategy and capital optimisation programme; JP Sa Couto on a public procurement tender for Kenya's Digital Literacy Programme; General Plastics Limited on a USD 14.2 million investment by Phatisa; M Holdings Limited on the acquisition of a controlling stake in Oriental Commercial Bank; and Kansai Plascon Africa on its proposed acquisition of Sadolin Paints' operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Burundi. In the tax space, he has advised on cross‑border tax implications, VAT and income tax consequences for platforms such as Airbnb, transfer pricing, and double tax treaties, and has represented clients in disputes with the Kenya Revenue Authority, including litigation support and court representation.

Alex holds an LL.B from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law, and is a Certified Public Secretary and a Certified Public Accountant.

He is ranked in Band 2 for Tax by Chambers Global (2024–2026), has been recognised as Highly Regarded for Private Equity, M&A and Tax by IFLR1000 (2020–2025), and is described as "very professional", "pragmatic and commercial", and possessing an "excellent understanding of commercial problems that need legal guidance".
