Cynthia Amutete

Cynthia Amutete is a Senior Associate in the Banking and Finance Department at Bowmans in Nairobi, specialising in banking and finance law, financial services regulation, fintech, and data protection. She advises clients on banking and finance transactions, financial services regulation including banking, insurance, capital markets, payment services, and fintech.

Cynthia has advised on significant transactions including HFC Limited on an investment subordinated convertible loan of up to KES 1 billion from Britam Holdings PLC; Sunculture Kenya Limited on a USD 11 million facility from various lenders; The Company for Habitat and Housing in Africa on the restructuring of approximately USD 7 million with multiple development finance institutions; and Liquid Telecommunications Kenya on facilities of up to USD 60 million and ZAR 6 billion from Standard Bank of South Africa, Standard Chartered Bank, and JPMorgan Chase. In the fintech space, she has advised Branch International Limited on receivables financing, Mastercard International and Visa Inc on the regulation of payment products and services in Kenya, PayPal Private Limited on the legal and regulatory environment for its services, and multiple confidential clients on the regulation of virtual currencies, crypto wallets, and digital tokens. She has also advised on data protection compliance for various clients, including undertaking data compliance audits and preparing data protection policies.

Cynthia holds an LL.B from the University of Nairobi and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. She is also a Certified Investment and Financial Analyst and completed a secondment at Trinity International in London as part of the International Lawyers for Africa (ILFA) 2024 programme.

She has been ranked as a Leading Associate for Banking, Finance and Capital Markets by The Legal 500 (2025–2026) and as a Rising Star for Banking and Finance by IFLR1000 (2022–2025).
