Richard Omwela SC

Richard Omwela SC is a Consultant in the Corporate, Commercial & Real Estate Department at Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, specialising in mergers and acquisitions, corporate and commercial law, and project finance. He has more than 40 years of experience and a record of accomplishment that includes managing a number of complex, high‑value transactions in Kenya, focusing on local, multinational and cross‑border transactions including public‑private partnerships, financings, acquisitions, privatisations, and capital markets transactions.

Richard has advised a multinational brewing and beverage company on the restructuring of its multi‑tiered ownership structure; a subsidiary of a British multinational financial conglomerate on financing one of Kenya's leading packaging solutions manufacturers; and a leading transport and logistics company in East Africa on the restructuring of their facilities. He has extensive experience in regulatory compliance, business set‑up, and advising international finance institutions on financing transactions across Kenya.

Richard holds an LL.B (Hons) from the University of Nairobi (1979) and a Diploma of Law from the Kenya School of Law (1980). He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya.

He has been consistently recognised as a leading lawyer by IFLR 1000, Legal 500, and Chambers Global, and was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) in 2010. He serves as Chairman of Monarch Insurance Limited, WPP‑Scangroup Limited, ABC BANK Group, and Octagon Africa Financial Services Limited, and has previously served as President of the Kenya Rugby Union.
